Marilyn's Newsletter

A hectic month for us here at Wren Music, as I write we are preparing for the start of the song writing phase of Devon Remembers and for the Devon Songs and Cream tea event tomorrow at Okehampton Charter Hall. Lots of posters attached this time as I’ve been away from my desk and not been able to let you know what’s on!

I have been out of touch throughout January as I have been working to a deadline that involved the initial plans to take Wren forward the next 30 years, as the whole team goes into an exciting phase of organisational development.

I hope all the groups and ensembles are settling down, and I can report an outstanding response to Her Story 2 with 58 singers at the first rehearsal last Sunday.

The Okehampton lanterns project is well underway, we’ve been out and about in the town teaching and learning traditional Devon Songs, and tomorrow Friday 3rd February, we are having a big sing-a-long and cream tea at Okehampton Charter Hall from 2.30pm, we’d love to see you there! The project then enters the next phase with lantern making workshops over the half term holiday, there are three slots to each day, and under 11 year old children must be accompanied by an adult.

The procession itself will be on Friday 17th at dusk, and we need volunteers to help steward the procession, and some to rattle collecting tins! Please contact me if you can help with this please.

Later on in February we start this year’s Your Voice Your Song. Over Saturdays: 25th February, 13th May and 22nd July, 10am to 5.00pm. Led by the team Sarah Owen, Marilyn Tucker and Paul Wilson these events are for you as an individual singer. This year each day will have a separate focus as well as core content relating to performing skills and vocal health. Each day will be rounded off by a Friendly Circle with afternoon tea!

25th February: Finding & building repertoire
13th May: Making the song your own
22nd July: Harmonies and accompaniment
Each day costs £40, or book all three for £100.

I am also putting out a call for volunteers to help us with the Baring-Gould Folk Weekend. We have one volunteer who is dealing with Morris sides, and we are looking for others to help with the preparation and administration of the weekend as well as stewarding for the weekend itself. There will be a meeting on Friday 3rd March at 2.20pm to 4.00pm at Ebenezer for those of you than can make it to set this initiative going. Please let me know if you can come along, or if you want to be involved.

Don’t forget the Orchestra’s Day coming up in early March, I’ll have more details of that next week.

I’ll be back in touch soon.
