Schools & Young People 

Music and singing plays an essential role in children’s development and our workshops are suitable for all early years settings as well as for older children. We bring folk instruments that you can strum, bow and squeeze as well as the more commonly used percussion instruments. We are always creating new song repertoire that encourages language development using simple techniques such as word substitution. This enables the young people to suggest their own ideas for song content and makes each song relevant to them.

We run participatory workshops specialising in folk music, singing and dance. Sessions are structured to work alongside your school timetable and we can work with individual classes, year groups or whole school groups depending on the activity. All workshops can be tailored to work with different themes, for example: medieval history, journeys, the sea; and we choose repertoire carefully to ensure it is relevant to your students and the curriculum. All resources are provided.


Our workshops can also include a sharing performance at the end, either to the rest of the school or for parents and families too.

Wren Music leaders come with Enhanced DBS Disclosure, first aid and child protection training, and we can provide plenty of instruments if required.


Who we can work with:


  • Pre-School Children and their Parents:  In partnership with specialist early years organisations, we encourage the development of pre-school learning in a range of settings.


  • Young People in and out of school


  • In-School tailored programmes designed to support work from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 3 and beyond. Includes whole class instrumental tuition – and Wren provides the instruments


  • Work with clusters of small schools providing ensemble opportunities; Inset for school workforce;


  • Support for specific project work within schools and communities, for example Song-writing workshops; Singing for Boys; Junk Band; Drumming;  Special Schools

We work with Music Hubs across the South West - in Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire – to provide music in schools and academies. See our Projects page for examples of the sort of programme we can run for your school and young people.


First Access for Primary Schools: 

Wren is a partner with SoundStorm, the lead partners of the Music Education hub for Bournemouth and Poole. We have been running first access folk sessions in lots of primary schools all over Bournemouth and Poole. We work with year 4 classes and aspire to get every child playing an instrument and to make a class band. The young people learn traditional local tunes on a big selection of folk instruments including fiddles, melodeons and whistles and also learn about rhythm, chord structures, and other musical features.

Music 4 Life

Partnerships with settings who work with children and young people in challenging circumstances. A typical project is a five week course, and we encourage the learners to become music leaders themselves to pass on what they have learned.

Wren Music ELER (young people at elevated risk) Project 2015-16

Wren Music was delighted to secure funding from Youth Music to continue our work with young people at risk of exclusion in various settings across Devon.This project summary is created in part from the final report to Youth Music. The idea was to work with young people at risk of exclusion and those with Social, Emotional and Behavioural issues, to develop their confidence. Working with Partners across the County, the activities included learning about acoustic instruments, practising pieces as a group, song-writing and other group skills including leadership through, for example, conducting or suggesting arrangementideas.
